Simple Ways To Green Your Prom Night

Simple Ways To Green Your Prom Night
By Alliah Sheta

Everyone is talking about going green, finding eco-friendly products and reducing their carbon footprint…What does it all mean anyway? You don’t need to be obsessed with recycling or celebrate Earth Day to understand these simple solutions that can help save the environment. At the very least you’ll show others what you care about and do some good in 2009! Be sure to check out the Eco-Key for definitions to all of these words you keep hearing about.

Eco Fashion
Your prom dress can be beautiful, affordable and made of sustainable materials. If it’s a new dress you’re after, try one made out fabric like hemp silk or others produced without pesticides. If you’re interested in finding something unique and super affordable a vintage dress could be for you. Need something a little more original? Take your favorite fabric to a designer and have a custom dress made. Ask for sustainable fabrics at a local supplier or use remnants that the store will most likely be throwing away anyway. Here are a few dresses that you wouldn’t even suspect being green!

Amour Sans Anguish was started by two fashion forward gals with a passion for the earth. All of their materials are recycled - even threads are purchased at second hand stores whenever possible. http://www.BTCElements.com

Ride Sharing
Renting a limo for the evening? Don’t go at it alone- invite friends to join you! Even better, ask your limo company if they have any hybrid vehicles or a party bus to hold even more people. Most importantly, be sure to plan a route for the driver. Cruising around town wasting gas that you’re paying for doesn’t do any good for the environment, your patience or your pocket! Map out your evening so you won’t be lingering and polluting! Here are a few of our top picks for HYBRID car choices:

Are limos out of your budget? Public transpiration rocks in NYC and takes about 700,000 cars off of the streets! Be NYC chic and grab the train or even a taxi with friends.

Accessories
Searching for those special touches to finish your prom look? Vintage is the way to go for accessories. Look for one of kind pieces in second hand stores or online- that way no one else will look as amazing as you do. Still can’t find what you’re looking for? Recycled accessories have come a long way thanks to designers like Kris Nations from BTC Elements. Kris is dedicated to using recycled metals and natural materials in her environmentally responsible jewelry line.

Make-Up & Hair Care
Make up is the easiest to keep Eco-friendly. Look for organic or natural, mineral powders and foundations. Mineral make up is made from naturally occurring minerals like iron oxides, mica powder and titanium dioxide. This means that the ingredients you are putting your face come straight from the earth, not from a science lab! Using powder also means there are no nasty oils in your makeup, which is good news for girls with extra sensitive skin. For make-up tools, sustainable brushes made from bamboo are the best. Also look for natural, recycled and cruelty free materials. http://www.parispresents.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=36

For your updo, make sure you use non-toxic, non-aerosol sprays and gels. Companies like Aveda.com use naturally occurring plant based essences and are one of the top beauty lines in the US. They also use sustainable packaging. When comparing products don’t forget that supporting socially responsible and fair trade companies benefits everyone. By supporting companies like these, you’re not promoting unfair employment practices in other countries.

Prom Planning
During the first stages of planning the prom, speak to fellow Prom committee members about finding ways to offset some of the carbon emissions from your event. You’ll be able to incorporate extra cost into the ticket price of services like http://www.CarbonFund.org or http://www.TerraPass.com . When you’re ready to distribute the Prom invitations to the masses, try using an email version first or create a Facebook group where students can RSVP. The most beautiful email invites can be found on http://www.Pingg.com where guests receive notification by email, SMS, Facebook, MySpace and even Twitter!

If that doesn’t fly with your class, look into using sustainable or recycled paper for the invitations and non-toxic or vegetable ink when you print. An easy way to identify responsible printers is the FSC certification.

If you’re over your head with planning, we recommend the services of http://www.Promoceans.com that launched the Eco-Prom™ in 2009. Simply stated, they will plant a tree for every couple that attends the Prom and have a variety of After-Proms and class cruise options which offer the same. We can’t think of anything better than that!
